STATE CONTROLLER JONES LEADS EFFORTS IN IDAHO GOVERNMENT
TO VERIFY EMPLOYMENT ELIGIBILITY
Boise, Idaho – Idaho State Controller Donna Jones announced her office has signed on to use the federal employment verification tool known as the Basic Pilot. The Basic Pilot is a free federal program that enables employers to confirm those they hire are eligible to work in America.
“I agree with Governor Otter – Idaho will not harbor those who try to shoplift citizenship” said Jones. “I’m pleased to announce that my office has signed on to implement the plan outlined by former Governor Risch to use the Basic Pilot to make sure the people we hire are eligible to work in our country.”
“I’ve also encouraged Idaho’s other top elected officials to join me in protecting tax dollars from being spent on fraudulent workers by implementing this program.”
The Basic Pilot Program for employment verification is an outgrowth of the Immigration Reform and Control Act (P.L. 99-603) passed by Congress in 1986. It works by checking a new employee’s employment credentials against the Social Security Administration’s database and several databases maintained by the Department of Homeland Security. Essentially, the Basic Pilot Program is a tool that allows employers to confirm the documents presented to complete the mandatory I-9 form for employment are legitimate.
“I’ve promised to do my part to eradicate fraud and waste in Idaho government,” stated Jones. “This effective and free tool will help my office ensure that illegal aliens are not defrauding taxpayers by being on the Controller’s payroll.”
